SMART AUTOMATION – The Platforms Overview

The new world of open industry platforms

The open platforms for smart automation presented on this page have only emerged in recent years. The technology, architecture, business model and even the terminology for this kind of industrial automation are still new and not standardized. Smart Automation – like automation as a whole – is a complex topic.

This page is independent and provides a neutral overview of solutions available in 2024. A survey was conducted in which nine companies took part. Only their solutions can be found here. It can be assumed that there are and will be other platforms.

Will it come down to one or a few platforms – as in the established world of smartphones and computers? This seems rather unlikely, as the manufacturing industry is a completely different world in terms of the diversity of devices, machines and systems to be connected.

The overview on this page alone shows how many fields of application for new digital services in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are being opened up by these platforms that have nothing to do with manufacturing itself.

The digital market for Smart Automation platforms

This page is the digital place where the current status of the development of this platform market is always just a click away. It is updated at least every six months with the details of the providers participating via subpages.

Lenze has put forward the idea of a “United Federation of Platforms”. That sounds reasonable and may well be a realistic prospect. It is to be hoped that the new technological possibilities will indeed usher in an era of open use for the industry.

The Openness of the Platforms

All platforms listed here are open for supplementary software from customers and partners. The term "own operating system" generally refers to a runtime environment based on the Linux operating system. The Industrie 4.0 Asset Administration Shell is currently supported in the form of individual submodels, as a final status has not yet been reached.

Application Areas of the Platforms

This matrix shows that Smart Automation solutions are by no means limited to production. Remote access to machines and products as well as condition monitoring, for example, are supported by many. The list of fields of application is likely to grow even longer.
