Strategic approach / Vision for PLM

Engineers should enable sustainable living with creative virtuality and digital continuity.
To this end, we want to virtualize product development by designing data, models, methods, tools and processes. By realizing new digital development intelligences as part of a socio-technical system, we contribute to a holistic view of the product life cycle and the development of sustainable products. In this way, we increase the innovative power and efficiency of engineering.

Core competencies / teaching focus

  • Configuration, functionality and application of computer systems and networks
  • Object-oriented programming in C++ with MS Visual Studio
  • IT-supported solutions for product development and production control in an industrial context
  • Product development processes and process management in hands-on IT application through project courses
  • CAD, CAE, DMU and VR/AR for product development and simulation
  • Modern product development methods in the context of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) with prototype development
  • Project work with a focus on sustainable IT applications for a holistic view of product development and production processes
  • Methods and tools of the digital factory for work and production process planning

Main research areas

Our research relates to the following levels:

  • Innovative information technology: We explore the application of technologies such as artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs, DMU/FMU or extended realities in the context of virtual product development.
  • Methodological skills: We research and develop data-based and methodical approaches in line with relevant tools to support product developers.
  • Value creation and life cycle contribution: Our research is geared towards the activities of engineers and the tools required for their contribution to value creation and life cycle.

We have three main areas of research across these levels:
